Xunaa Borough Incorporation Election Announcement Xunaa Borough Incorporation Election pausedThe Alaska Division of Elections officially received notification that it needs to pause the incorporation election. The DOE is on pause until further notice is received from the Local Boundary Commission.The Superior Court has ordered a stay of the Local Boundary Commission’s decision approving the formation of the Xunaa Borough in City of Pelican, et al v. Local Boundary Commission. The order prevents the Local Boundary Commission and “other agencies acting on its behalf” from taking any further steps toward the formation of the Xunaa Borough while the appeal is pending. A notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of AS 29.05.110,29.05.120, and 29.45.680 an election will be held in the proposed Xunaa Borough on July 15, 2025, to determine: Shall the non-unified home rule Xunaa Borough be incorporated? (Incorporation of the non-unified home rule Xunaa Borough will result in the concurrent dissolution of the existing City of Hoonah.)Shall the Xunaa Borough institute a 1% seasonal areawide sales tax and other sales taxes asproposed by exhibit W in the incorporation petition?The composition of the borough assembly and school board. If a majority of voters approve the incorporation question above, the Xunaa Borough will be governed by a seven-member borough assembly, including a mayor, elected at large.
