Alaska Statute 24.05.080 is amended by adding new subsections and being renumbered accordingly to read: The term of each member of the legislature begins on the third Tuesday in January. The term of representatives is two years, and the term of senators is four years. One-half of the senators shall be elected every two years. No person having served twelve (12) consecutive years as a member of the legislature shall again be eligible to serve as a member of the legislature until six (6) years have intervened from when that person last held office as a member of the legislature. In no case shall any person be eligible to serve as a member of the legislature for more than twenty (20) years in total. Any person having already served for a period equal to, or exceeding, twelve (12) consecutive years as a member of the legislature upon the effective date of this initiative shall finish their current term and not be eligible to serve as a member of the legislature until six (6) years have intervened from when that person last held office as a member of the legislature. Any person having already served for a period equal to, or exceeding, twenty (20) years in total as a member of the legislature upon the effective date of this initiative shall finish their current term and thereafter be ineligible to serve as a member of the legislature. Any and all time served as a member of the legislature. elected. or appointed. to either partial or full terms of office, or any combination thereof, shall be counted for purposes of the limitations established in this section. Further, no person shall be eligible to be appointed, nominated, or elected as a member of the legislature should such an appointment, nomination, or election result in that person serving as a member of the legislature in excess of any limitation established in this section.
