Incorporation Elections

Election Dates, Locations and Times

Election dates, voting locations and times will be announced for each incorporation election as they are scheduled.

Alaska's Incorporation Elections

Municipal incorporation is proposed by filing a petition with the Local Boundary Commission. The petition must include information required by AS 29.05.060.

When an incorporation petition is accepted by the Local Boundary Commission, the Director of Elections shall order an election in the municipality to determine whether the voters desire incorporation and, if so, to elect the initial municipal officials. If incorporation is rejected, no officials are elected. The election is held not less than 30 days and not more than 90 days after the date of the election order.

The election order shall be issued within 30 days after receiving notification from the Local Boundary Commission of its acceptance of an incorporation petition. The election order must specify the dates during which nomination petitions for election of initial municipal officials may be filed. Nominations for initial municipal officials are made by petition and submitted to the Director of Elections for certification on the ballot.

A qualified voter who is registered to vote within the proposed municipality at least 30 days before the date of the election order may vote.
