STATEMENT:

My goals for a second term are the same I've worked on the past four years: good jobs for Alaskans; quality schools; safe, healthy children and communities; budget discipline.

Jobs:
We've helped create 8,400 jobs; another 14,000 are projected by 2002. By partnering with Alaska's industries, I'll do development right -- hire Alaskans, use Alaska businesses, protect our air, water and wildlife. I'll promote Alaska as open and ready for business to expand sales of our fish, oil, minerals, timber and tourism potential.

Quality schools:
For the first time, we enacted a "quality schools initiative" -- mandatory standards and testing and delivered 26 million new dollars for schools. I'll improve schools so young Alaskans are prepared for challenges of the international marketplace.

Safe, healthy children and communities:
We'll continue our Smart Start initiative to impose zero tolerance on child abuse and neglect. I'll work to limit children's access to tobacco, alcohol and drugs; continue anti-crime initiatives; retire the honeybucket; and protect a woman's right to choose.

Budget discipline:
Working with legislators, we've cut spending $238 million. The current budget is $1,605 less per Alaskan than in 1979. In four years, the Permanent Fund has grown 80% to $25 billion, producing record dividends. As long as I'm governor, there will be no tinkering with the Fund or dividends without a public vote.

Bringing Alaskans together:
I'll keep working to unify -- not divide -- Alaskans. We must protect rural subsistence. We must treat all Alaskans fairly, regardless of where they live or their skin color.
