Regional Educational Attendance Area (REAA) Candidate Information

Candidate Qualification Information

  • To file for a vacant REAA seat, you must be registered to vote and reside within the boundaries of the REAA district.

  • In addition, when an REAA nominates candidates by section, you must also reside within the boundaries of the section.

  • To learn what REAA seats are up for election, visit our seats available webpage.

  • When the division receives notification of a resignation or vacancy on or before July 15, that seat will be on the ballot of the REAA election held that year. You may file as a candidate for this seat and complete the term of office.

  • When the division receives notification of a resignation or vacancy after July 15, another person is appointed by the board to serve until the next regular REAA election. You may file as a candidate for this seat for the next regular REAA election and complete the term of office, if applicable.

  • Each term for office is for three years unless you are filing for a vacant seat.

Filing for Office Information

File By Declaration of Candidacy

  • To file as an REAA candidate by Declaration of Candidacy, print and complete a Declaration of Candidacy form.

  • Your filing form must be received by the division no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2017. If filing by mail, the candidacy form must be postmarked by Friday, August 4, 2017 and received within 10 days.

File as a Write-In Candidate

  • To run as a write-in candidate, print and complete a Letter of Intent-REAA form.

  • Your letter of intent form must be received by the division no later than 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28, 2017.

How to File Your Declaration of Candidacy Paperwork

  • By Mail – You may mail your Declaration of Candidacy. It must be postmarked by Friday, August 4, 2017 and received by the Division of Elections within 10 days of the postmark date. You may mail it to: Division of Elections, PO Box 110017, Juneau AK 99811-0017 or your Regional Elections Office.

  • By Fax, Email or In Person – You may fax, email or deliver your Declaration of Candidacy in person. It must be received by the Division of Elections no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2017.

  • You may fax it to 1-907-465-3203 or email it to elections@alaska.gov or you may fax or email it to your Regional Elections Office. You may hand deliver it to any Division of Elections Office.
